In the next few weeks, fraudsters could take advantage of the census, i.e. the upcoming referendum, to either cheat unsuspecting citizens of their savings directly at their front door or to access sensitive data for later fraud.

The investigators from the Crime Prevention Office therefore advise remaining vigilant.

A guide:

What is the census? The census is intended to provide science, politics and administration with current housing and population figures. From May 16th there will be a survey with personal interviews throughout Germany. With the 2022 census, Germany is taking part in an EU-wide census round that has been scheduled to take place every ten years since 2011. Due to the corona pandemic, the upcoming census was postponed from 2021 to 2022.

How does the survey work?

Participants will receive a written appointment notice from an interviewer. All owners of apartments or houses will be contacted by post by the responsible state statistical office for the building and apartment census. The interview itself lasts between five and ten minutes.

How do I recognize a scam?

  • The interviews start on May 16, 2022. If someone rings your doorbell before then, it is a scam
  • The interviewers never come unannounced
  • You will never be asked about your income or bank details

Do you have any evidence of possible fraud? Dial 110.
