Twitter has announced that a bug meant that passwords could be viewed unencrypted.

Please change your password and, for your protection, use two-factor authentication so that you can receive a code on your cell phone if you attempt to log in! By the way, Twitter itself warns:

We recently discovered a bug that exposed passwords in an internal log. We have fixed the error and our investigation revealed no evidence of a breach or misuse by anyone. However, out of caution, we ask you to change your password on all services where you have used this password.

You should now do these things:

  1. Change your password on Twitter and any other service where you used the same password.
  2. Use a strong password that you don't reuse on other websites.
  3. Enable login verification, also known as two-factor authentication. This is the best measure to increase the security of the account.
  4. For example, also use a password manager to ensure that strong, unique passwords are used everywhere.

Change password: Click on the avatar image in the bar at the top. Then select “Settings and data protection” in the drop-down menu. In the left menu area you will now find the “Password” entry. Please follow the instructions here.

In the app on the smartphone it works very similarly: select your avatar picture at the top. In the menu that now appears you will find the item “Settings and data protection”. Now tap on “Account”, then on “Password”.

Please also set up two-factor authentication. To do this, click on Account in the left-hand menu and set up the registration confirmation. On the smartphone, this function can also be found under “Account” and then “Security”.
