Scammers are now offering alleged help with investing and making money using a fake version of ChatGPT, Bitdefender has discovered.

Emails lead to ChatGPT fake

According to Bitdefender Antispam Labs, these “AI-powered” scams start with a simple email that lands in your inbox without being asked. According to Bitdefender, senders are currently targeting users in Germany, Denmark, Australia, Ireland and the Netherlands. The subject varies, possible subject lines are:

  • ChatGPT: The new AI bot is driving everyone crazy
  • ChatGPT: The new AI bot shocked everyone
  • The new ChatGPT chatbot is driving everyone crazy now – but it will very soon be a tool as banal as Google
  • Why are all people panicking about the ChatGPT bot?

If those aren't sensational titles. Since ChatGPT has been on everyone's lips for some time and always leads to discussions, it is quite possible that such a subject will entice you to open the email. This contains hardly any text, so recipients have to go to the link in the email that supposedly takes them to ChatGPT.

The researchers at Bitdefender Antispam Labs took a closer look at this.

Fake ChatGPT supposedly helps to increase money

Now things get interesting. The fake platform's chatbot begins with a brief introduction explaining how it analyzes the financial markets and can help anyone become a successful investor in global stocks. Unusual, because the real chatbot generally only responds to user input or questions and does not write any text without being asked. In addition, it was not possible to freely enter answers. Instead, Bitdefender researchers had to choose between predefined answers.

The further process:

  • The chatbot first wants to calculate the user's daily income.
  • An email address is then requested to confirm the “authenticity” of the user.
  • You should then provide additional contact information for your own “personal assistant”. This should help to activate a WhatsApp account for future income.
  • This is followed by a phone call. You will be asked for an investment amount that must be over 250 euros.
  • The last six digits of a valid ID card are also requested.
  • You will then receive a link to a form through which the transactions can be started. Additional personal data is requested here, such as name, date of birth, address and payment method (debit or credit cards, Klarna).

With all of this requested data, fraudsters could be able to put together a complete identity number and use it to commit identity theft.

It's nothing new for scammers to use new tools or trends on the internet to commit scams. To try out the official ChatGPT and its AI-controlled text generation, you should only get started via the official website .

Never click on links contained in unsolicited messages! You should be particularly careful with investment offers, warns Bitdefender.
