Since the company OpenAI released the chatbot ChatGPT, a million users have already spoken to the chatbot. The ISM professors Dr. Veith Tiemann for Data Science & Analytics and Dr. Johannes Moskaliuk for business psychology and online learning have already put the AI through its paces. According to the two digitalization experts, imitating human thinking will pose major challenges for universities and society in the future.

The chatbot ChatGPT provides a lot of discussion. Over a million users have already “communicated” with the AI since its launch in December. The astonished reactions on social media range from great enthusiasm to risk assessments to lurid warnings about the impending apocalypse.

ChatGPT is a language model – not a knowledge model

From the perspective of Professor Dr. According to Johannes Moskaliuk, the sometimes violent reactions of users are understandable, but not very helpful when it comes to a sober assessment of ChatGPT. Digitization expert Moskaliuk differentiates that this is currently still a language model and not a knowledge model.

This distinction is essential when it comes to evaluating the new technology: “ChatGPT is based on an artificial neural network that tries to represent human language in a statistical model. This model describes which sentences, answers and statements are appropriate in a certain context.

To do this, the model is trained with existing content, which in the case of GPT is billions of words that are published on websites on the Internet.” The new technology therefore tries to imitate human communication, without any creative thinking of its own, emphasizes Moskaliuk: “The AI “Doesn’t “understand” what it’s about, but rather calculates which answer might be appropriate – with a high degree of accuracy.”

ChatGPT imitates speech based on statistical calculations

A look at Google is helpful to show the further development of ChatGPT, explains ISM professor Dr. Veith Tiemann for data science and business analytics. In contrast to Google, ChatGPT no longer shows the links or text sources for a keyword search, but rather creates a precise answer based on an artificial neural network.

This is calculated based on statistical relationships and probabilities. Since human language also thrives on subtleties and nuances, strange results and even fake news can arise: “The chatbot is only as precise and correct as the text content with which it was fed,” says the statistics expert. Expert Tiemann.

Illusion of mental performance is the real challenge of ChatGPT

“The fact that the distinction between sophisticated speech imitation and independent thinking is no longer transparent to human users appears to be the real challenge in dealing with the new AI generation,” explains Tiemann. For this reason, a cross-disciplinary professional and social discussion is also necessary, as ISM colleague and business psychologist Johannes Moskaliuk demands:

“Psychological, social, ethical and legal aspects make an interdisciplinary view of the upcoming changes necessary. With the new AI services, we have to solve questions like these: Who is responsible for an AI that makes discriminatory statements - and thus only reflects what the system has combined based on training data? Who assumes responsibility for treatment errors that occurred based on a recommendation from an AI? Who has the rights to a poem written by an AI?”

In the future, universities will not only be required to rethink their examination evidence, but will also have to scientifically address the effects of the new AI systems in an interdisciplinary manner.

Background:
The International School of Management (ISM) is a state-recognized, private, non-profit university and is one of the leading private universities in Germany. At locations in Dortmund, Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart and Berlin, young managers for internationally oriented commercial companies are trained in compact and application-related courses. The range of courses includes full-time programs, part-time and dual study programs as well as completely digital distance learning. In university rankings, the ISM regularly makes it to the top places with its high teaching quality, internationality and practical relevance. The international network includes around 190 partner universities.
