Have you ever immersed yourself in the fascinating world of artificial intelligence (AI)? If yes, then you must have heard of ChatGPT, an AI from OpenAI. Many people wonder whether they should use ChatGPT instead of Google. But is this a wise decision?
ChatGPT vs Google: A duel of giants
It's no secret that Google is the dominant search engine, while ChatGPT is more of a novelty. But what exactly differentiates the two platforms?
- Google is a search engine that allows users to search for specific information by entering keywords.
- ChatGPT is an AI language model designed to generate human-like text and answer user questions in real time.
Example: We asked the same question “ Where can I take my sweetheart tonight” to both ChatGPT and Google
Google's answer:

ChatGPT's answer

Simply explained:
- Google : Google is a search engine. When you make a query, Google searches the entire internet where those words appear and shows you a list of websites that best match your search. Google constantly updates its results based on new content published on the internet.
- ChatGPT : ChatGPT is an AI model. It answers your questions by drawing on what it learned during its training period. The model cannot add new information from the Internet after its training ends (September 2021). Therefore, it may sometimes not inform about events or information after this date. It's more like an interlocutor trying to provide helpful answers based on prior knowledge.
On the whole, Google offers a wide range of information, while ChatGPT is more of a conversational tool that tries to provide answers to questions in a human way.
But why you shouldn't always rely on ChatGPT!
Although ChatGPT can be incredibly useful, it also has its drawbacks and dangers. Here are some reasons why you shouldn't always rely on ChatGPT:
- Limited Knowledge: ChatGPT can only provide information known up to its training date. It is unable to process new developments or current events that occur after this date. With version 3.5 this is limited until 2021.
- Lack of fact-checking: While Google displays (mostly) trustworthy sources, ChatGPT generates answers based on the training data set fed to it without verifying the accuracy of the information.
- Possible Misunderstandings: ChatGPT may misunderstand the meaning of complex or ambiguous questions, thereby providing incorrect or inaccurate answers.
An example of a misunderstanding on ChatGPT when asked: “What ingredients do I need for a chocolate cake?” “

User: What ingredients do I need for a chocolate cake?
ChatGPT: To make a chocolate cake you will need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, cocoa powder, milk and vinegar. You can also add vanilla extract or chocolate chips to enhance the flavor.
In this example, the user asked for the ingredients for a chocolate cake. ChatGPT's answer provides a list of the basic ingredients for a chocolate cake, but does not give specific quantities or instructions on how to prepare it. In addition, vinegar does not belong in any chocolate cake. Therefore, the answer could be considered incomplete or inaccurate because important details are missing.
The user would therefore have to make this request:
“What ingredients do I need for a chocolate cake? Create a list of the ingredients including exact quantities and instructions for preparation.”
Then ChatGPT's response looks like this

On Google, the answer looks like this:

What dangers and risks lurk with ChatGPT?
In addition to the disadvantages mentioned, using ChatGPT also entails risks . Here are some of them:
- Misinformation: Because ChatGPT is not updated in real time and does not check facts, there is a risk of users receiving misleading or incorrect information.
- Privacy Concerns: Although OpenAI has privacy policies, users who disclose more sensitive information could be at risk.
- Relying on AI Decisions: Over-reliance on ChatGPT can cause users to neglect their ability to critically analyze and think for themselves.
How should you behave?
Despite the dangers mentioned above, it is important to emphasize that ChatGPT can be a useful tool if used correctly. Below are some tips to help you use ChatGPT safely and effectively:
- Check the Facts: Don’t blindly rely on ChatGPT’s answers. Always verify the information you receive with trusted sources.
- Be careful with personal information: Do not reveal sensitive personal information when using ChatGPT.
- Balance your sources: Use ChatGPT as a complement to other information sources like Google, not as a replacement.
Conclusion: So does it make sense to use ChatGPT instead of Google? That depends on the respective situation. While ChatGPT is undoubtedly a powerful AI tool, it also has its limitations and risks. As with any tool, the key to using it safely and effectively is understanding how it works and being aware of the potential dangers.
