The man posed as an American doctor who was in Kuwait on business. The perpetrator managed to gain the trust of the victim, so that she sent him the codes for several prepaid cards totaling 950 euros due to a fake financial emergency. The victim only later realized that she was a victim of fraud and filed a criminal complaint with the police.

Police information

In this context, the police once again point out that social networks are often misused by fraudsters to get to their victims. What is usually promised is great love, quick money or the best job.

Beware of love scamming

The so-called “romance scamming” or “love scamming” is a well-known fraud phenomenon in which the perpetrators unfortunately always manage to win over “lonely hearts”. What begins as a short chat or harmless online flirtation usually continues with a pitiful story that only serves to take money out of those affected. The gullible victims want to help their new acquaintance and sometimes even transfer larger amounts of money several times until they realize that they are being lied to.

Therefore, our recommendation: If you use such online services, are active on dating platforms or suddenly receive a nice message from a complete stranger on social networks, stay alert! Don’t “give away” money to people you don’t really know and have never met.
