The photo of a benefit notice from the Stuttgart job center is being shared again and is causing some users to be dissatisfied. What exactly is behind the numbers on the notice?
Here we see a current Facebook posting (redacted by us):

"Where's this going to end? Our own people save and cut money and even get a hotel paid for... The average wage in the West is around €35,000 a year. In the East it's only €30,000. How can it be that this aspiring skilled worker gets €42,000 a year without lifting a finger???"
It is not the first time that benefit notices from offices and job centers have been photographed and ended up online. Explanatory comments or even entire contexts are then left out and the focus is purely on the amount mentioned. This is also the case in the current publications on Facebook.
We know from previous, similar publications that larger amounts of money are usually achieved by aggregating benefits for families over longer periods of time. These services are neither paid out in cash nor made available to families at all, but go directly to service providers or landlords.
This can be seen from the image that is currently widely distributed, as it is pointed out in the notice that calculation sheets are also attached to this notice.

Since a completely uncommented benefit notice basically says little, we wrote to the job center shown in the notice.

When we asked about the decision from the Stuttgart Job Center, which was distributed and commented on in internet media and by users, we received an answer:
Outrage and incomprehension about the level of benefits are often expressed and an inadmissible reference is made to the issue of refugees. It is advisable to keep such discussions objective. This can lead to situations in which the city wants and needs to prevent homelessness. That's why it provides living space in an emergency. Regulatory law also requires this.
The city will also cover appropriate hotel or guesthouse costs if no other accommodation options are available. This is especially true when it comes to families . This naturally results in temporarily higher costs for accommodation. These expenses are shown in the notices together with the standard living expenses.
The accommodation costs for hotels or social pensions are paid to the landlord . They are not available to benefit recipients. When it comes to legally prescribed SGB II benefits, there is of course no distinction made between 'German' and 'non-German' beneficiaries. It depends on the legal assessment in each individual case.
Further explanations of specific calculations are not possible for reasons of social data protection and will not be communicated by us. But I hope that the connections have become a little clearer for you.
