We actually only know these black blocks on more expensive goods: anti-theft devices that ensure that a shrill alarm sounds if you try to smuggle them outside the checkout and are equipped with GPS. In Great Britain, this is now also necessary for cheese, because the rising prices of everyday products seem to be forcing more people affected by poverty to steal.

The photos of the anti-theft cheese

Several tweets with photos , which were eventually posted as screenshots on Facebook in German-speaking countries:

The original source of the photo appears to be this tweet:

The photos were taken in Aldi and Coop stores in Wolverhampton. But other stores also put anti-theft devices on everyday products, like this one on butter in an Asda store in Elswick, Newcastle:

Not a rule

A spokesman for Asda told Business Insider that butter is not now generally provided with anti-theft devices in stores. There is also no general data showing that butter is stolen more often.

However, certain products have probably been stolen more frequently in an individual store recently, which is why the store manager has decided to add an anti-theft device to these products. However, this is not viewed as a change in customer behavior or a side effect of inflation.

However, in a Sainsbury's store in London, Business Insider reporters found a large number of products with safety stickers: medical, health and beauty products such as hay fever tablets, disposable face masks, plasters, mouthwash, hair wax and toothpaste as well as bars of Cadburys and Lindt chocolate, to maintain low prices, according to a store notice.

But more theft?

According to “ Ifsec Global ,” with rising inflation, the number of retail thefts has also risen sharply.

One store manager told British trade publication The Grocer that more shoplifters were targeting low-cost, everyday items, while another reported that an elderly customer had tried to steal shampoo and washing powder.

High inflation in Britain

Britain is currently facing its worst inflation in 40 years, rising 9.1% in the 12 months to May - the highest since at least February 1982, when it hit 10.2%.

This is also clearly reflected in the prices: a pack of Lurpak butter is sometimes even priced at 9 pounds (10.63 euros), and at the grocer Morrisons, which attached safety labels to multivitamins for children, they cost 8.50 pounds ( 10.03 euros).

How does it look for us?

We have also been expecting higher prices for milk and therefore also for butter since February and a month later to 70 cents. And unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the end of the story: in the coming months, the prices for milk and cheese are expected to rise further .

It remains to be seen whether retailers in this country will now decide to install anti-theft devices on everyday products. In any case, it will be a sad development if it gets to the point where only the better off can afford the daily butter on their bread.
