Significantly more physical activity and fewer sleep problems

Children with high social media activity are more physically active, less likely to suffer from sleep problems and less likely to report family conflicts. This is the conclusion reached by researchers at the National Institutes of Health in their first publications on the “Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.” The researchers analyzed the frequency of media use, physical activity and neurological perception in nine to ten year old children.

Strengthened sense of community

According to the study, children who are more active on the social web spend less time playing video games and watching television. Instead, they interact with their peers online. The first social networks are being established on Instagram, Facebook and Co.

“Children in this age group use social media as a means of communication,”

says study director Martin Paulus.

Media educator Barbara Buchegger from Saferinternet assesses the figures for Austria similarly:

“Especially in this age group, Instagram, Facebook and the like are important means of expression. “Children learn on the social web how communication works,”

says Buchegger in an interview with pressetext and emphasizes:

“Parents should accompany their children on the social web. They should encourage the curiosity of young people and at the same time be open to new things themselves.”

Negative effects of TV and video games

Children who spend a lot of time watching TV or playing video games are more prone to sleep disorders and report more family conflicts, the study shows. According to Paulus, reducing stress and distracting yourself through media consumption could be one reason for this. Overall, the effects of screen use on child development are small. According to the scientist, the study results help to allay parental concerns.
