The photo of a boy wearing a numbered shirt raises questions for many users.
The shirt supposedly came from the immigration authorities. Does it actually serve as identification like in a concentration camp?
The inquiries we receive about this photo sound something like this:
Admittedly, if you only see the photo - or this image section - you probably wouldn't get the idea that children are numbered here like in a concentration camp.
The accompanying text that was published with this photo is interesting.
The fact check
As our colleagues at Snopes the photo appeared on Facebook and Instagram with this very claim:
This little boy, who has been taken from his parents, has been assigned a number. #47 on his chest and arm. Like the Holocaust. •••••••••••••••••••••••••• The Keep Families Together Act S-3036 has the support of All Democrats EXCEPT Claire McCaskill (D-MO) 202- 224-6154; Joe Donnelly (D-IN) 202-224-4814; Joe Tester (D-MT)202-224-2644; Doug Jones (D-AL)202-224-4124; Heidi Heitkamp (D-NV) 202-224-2043; Joe Marchon (D-WV) 202-224-3954. At this point, NOT ONE Republican has signed on to this bill that would prohibit children from being separated from their parents. PLEASE CALL your members of Congress. 202-224-3121. Look at this image. It should send chills up your spine. We must not let history repeat itself. We must speak loud and clear. #Wherearethechildren
The post creator says here that the boy was taken away from his parents and was given a number. “The #47 – on the chest and upper arm. Like in the Holocaust.”
But is that really true?
The photo itself can be found in a June 16, 2018 New York Times article titled “ You Can’t Be Pro-Life and Against Immigrant Children .” Here it is clear that the original photo was cropped.
The caption of the photo reads:

In this country, too, the photo can be found in a DW article entitled “ USA: 2000 children of illegal immigrants separated from parents ”.
Here is the caption:
After crossing the border, many children of illegal immigrants go to a home
In both cases, the image source is John Moore , who can be easily found on Getty Images. Of course, he didn't just take this one photo. There is a whole series of photos.
If you now look at the other photos more closely, you will notice that none of the other children are wearing such a numbered shirt. There is also no photo of the officers handing out such shirts to children.
The photographer describes the requested photo like this:
Border Patrol Agents Detain Migrants Near US-Mexico Border
MISSION, TX – JUNE 12: A boy and father from Honduras are taken into custody by US Border Patrol agents near the US-Mexico Border on June 12, 2018 near Mission, Texas. The asylum seekers were then sent to a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing center for possible separation. US border authorities are executing the Trump administration's 'zero tolerance' policy towards undocumented immigrants. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions also said that domestic and gang violence in immigrants' country of origin would no longer qualify them for political asylum status. According to the photographer and also the media reports, the boy was actually separated from his parents. But he didn't receive a number. So it is a commercial garment that was not distributed by the government.
Result:
This boy from Honduras was not given a concentration camp number.
