Whether subscription traps, content that is not suitable for children or long-term use with addictive potential: when children use smartphones and tablets, there are also risks involved. That's why the consumer advice center and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Criminal Police Office recommend making settings to control media consumption before using it for the first time:

Set up third-party blocking

Advertising is a constant companion on smartphones. In many cases, a careless or accidental tap on an advertising banner is enough to end up in a subscription trap. To prevent unwanted billing items from occurring in the first place, a so-called third-party block be set up by the mobile phone company. Then the phone number is not automatically transmitted to the providers of apps and subscriptions.

Take app permissions and data protection into account

Apps often pass on personal data unnoticed. It is therefore advisable to take a close look at the apps already installed on the device. Apps that are not needed should be uninstalled. It's best to revoke the apps' permissions, such as accessing photos or sending notifications, as much as possible. In any case, the permissions should match the functions of the app. It is also advisable to set up a PIN for app purchases.

Use the right search engine

When surfing the Internet, young people should use special browsers such as fragFINN or BlindeKuh . These children's search engines only spit out verified content that is definitely suitable for young children.

Set up parental controls on iOS or Android

Many of the technical protection devices are provided by the operating systems of the devices themselves. These include security settings such as a password, but also the blocking of certain Internet content or the limitation of usage times. The website Medien-kindersicher.de provides comprehensive information about technical protection solutions for children's devices, services and apps.

Strengthen media literacy

It's important not to rely solely on filters and settings. Instead, it is important to strengthen the child's online skills in order to protect them from certain dangers online. It therefore makes sense to regularly discuss the dangers of the Internet with your children and to set common rules, for example about permitted apps and websites and the duration of use.

The consumer advice center offers themed evenings and workshops for schools and daycare centers to provide young and old with information about topics related to media use or sustainable consumption. Those interested can find further information on the police website .
