We know scenes in political propaganda in which children are exploited.
These are often “far away”. Children present guns and are portrayed as heroic child soldiers. We know these images from places that are far away. From Africa or the Middle East. Or from times long past. In the past and present, children have repeatedly been not only the instrument, but also the target and means of pressure of propaganda.
With children you put adults under emotional pressure, the Viennese historian Christa Hämmerle reported in an ORF article [ 1 ] that children, for example, influenced by propaganda, urged quite a few parents to subscribe to war bonds during the First World War. But as I just mentioned: it all always sounds so far away!
Until just now. Until a video appeared on Facebook in which a child spoke about virtues, national pride, the honor of German soldiers and what they did for the fatherland.
“…how one should act as a decent German”
Convinced of what he says, he speaks sentences in front of war memorials like “what they did for us back in the war.” Of course, many of the things mentioned in the video are of course behaviors that one should generally engage in. However, these behaviors have less to do with fatherland and national pride, but are generally socially important behaviors.
He talks about the fatherland, German-Prussian virtues and also “other homeland songs” that you have to be able to sing. Just as he speaks in front of the camera about having to be able to sing the German national anthem in all three verses if you want to be national.
A national appearance requires the memory of our mothers and fathers who went to war for us to fight for Germany.
You can clearly hear how hard he is trying to say this sentence. At the end of the sentence his gaze wanders. Cut.
The video lasts 3 minutes and 20 seconds. It is riddled with cuts. Many topics are addressed in it. Honor, war, remembrance, leftists who tarnish remembrance. In the end you're left with a bland taste. I thought for a long time whether this video wasn't a sick joke. A tasteless attempt at satire, but there is no tangible approach to it.
Turkish mosque lets small children appear in military uniform
It doesn't feel any different: in a Ditib mosque in Herford, children performed a battle scene from the First World War. Dressed in uniforms, they present weapons. These recordings are only a few days old and come from the middle of East Westphalia.
I'm confused. Children and political propaganda are apparently no longer as far away as I always assumed.
