Warning! Memes, WhatsApp stickers and photo montages with banned National Socialist content in children's chats

Not only we, but also our cooperation partner from “Saferinternet” are currently warning about WhatsApp groups in which children share forbidden content. Content that is shared for fun but is anything but funny. The viral spread achieves a very high reach within a very short period of time.

The children's motive for founding such groups is usually one: they want to provoke.

Barbara Buchegger, Saferinternet.at: “The point is that stickers with National Socialist ideas are being spread in WhatsApp groups.
This is often spread in very large groups where there are children between the ages of 11 and 13, and for the children it is actually not understandable or understandable why some content is forbidden and others are not. We assume that probably one in four young people will come into contact with such groups at some point.
These groups are probably seen in the environment of provocation. They also collect a lot of other content that is inhumane, misogynistic and racist. It's kind of... part of sharing things like this on social networks. A really unpleasant development.”

Consequences unclear for most

Such groups can only be exposed through the attention of other children who report the banned content. When analyzing cell phones, the police also repeatedly come across National Socialist ideas in WhatsApp groups. For example, when she comes to school because of cyberbullying. It's enough just to be a member of such a group and have the content on your cell phone. Very few people are aware of the consequences.

“If they are under 14 years of age, they cannot actually commit a crime because they are not yet of criminal responsibility. However, it is quite likely that this possession or further distribution of re-use will become a matter of record. “That means we can assume that this could affect them in some way in the future when they are over 14,” Barbara Buchegger continued.

Education is extremely important

The Saferinternet initiative is primarily concerned with teaching people how to use the seemingly endless possibilities of the Internet safely. In order to prevent the spread of Nazi ideas on social media, education is particularly important for Barbara Buchegger. So that memes, photo montages and WhatsApp stickers like these will really be history in the future.

“You also have to explain to the children why they should be evaluated differently and what lies behind it. Which is the reason why such things are banned here in Austria and Germany. “The point here is that we show what our history is, why it came to this and why it is still important today to deal with these symbols and these ideas,” Barbara Buchegger concludes the interview.
