Pet owners in China are supposedly supposed to get rid of their pets within 5 days or the authorities will take care of it.

At least that is what several media are reporting, which of course causes concern, that a total of 10,000 pets are to be killed because of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

The relevant articles claim that Chinese authorities have issued a decree requiring the slaughter of over 10,000 domestic animals due to the coronavirus outbreak. The authorities are now said to have given pet owners an ultimatum of 5 days to “get rid of” their pets, otherwise the authorities will take care of it.

The original source

The report originally came from the “Euro Weekly News” website. The article has now been deleted , but the colleagues at “ Correctiv able to archive it beforehand .

Accordingly, the site received a letter “from a local source” calling for people to “deal with the pets” within five days in an unnamed location in Hebei Province, and there was also a committee in Shaanxi Province demanded that the pets be killed.

Street dogs, not pets!

Correctiv a letter from a citizen on the official Jinzhai government website calling for an end to the killing of dogs and cats. However, the government denied the rumor, but it was true that street dogs were being killed to prevent the spread of the virus.

Conclusion

The original source “Euro Weekly News” has now deleted its article itself, but other sites continue to spread the false claim.
“Correctiv” wrote to the operators of the site on February 11th to find out in which city exactly that decree was issued, but apparently received no response to date.

So the claim that people are being asked to kill their own pets because of the new coronavirus can be dismissed as an unconfirmed rumor. What is true, however, is that stray animals are being killed, as the government also confirmed.
