Every year in winter, manufacturers of fairy lights, Christmas tree stands and candles can look forward to increased demand. However, consumers should look carefully when choosing a product: otherwise there is an increased risk of accidents, short circuits and fires, explain experts from TÜV Rheinland. Fires increase by around 40 percent during Advent.

Fairy lights: energy saving and safe

When testing light chains, the experts at TÜV Rheinland pay particular attention to electrical safety and heating. “LED has a clear advantage over conventional lighting,” explains safety expert Berthold Tempel from TÜV Rheinland. “LED bulbs hardly get hot, the risk of fire and electric shock is significantly lower and they use considerably less electricity.” For comparison: a string of lights with incandescent or halogen lamps uses around ten times more electricity within four weeks than a string of LED lights .

When buying fairy lights or multiple sockets, which are usually used for connection, it is important to pay attention to the CE conformity mark. Otherwise, these devices are not allowed to be sold in Europe. Increased attention is particularly required when purchasing online from retailers outside the EU.

Candles: Drip-free and soot-free – Tea light ovens: Fire hazard

When purchasing candles, consumers can take a few things into consideration: Candles made from paraffin have the advantage over real wax candles in that they are drip-free. Candles made from real wax should therefore always be placed on a fireproof surface. In addition, a candle should burn in a controlled manner and produce as little soot as possible. If necessary, shortening the wick can help. The flame should also not be exposed to direct drafts and a candle should always be placed at a sufficient distance from flammable objects, such as curtains.

Berthold Tempel can only warn about the use of so-called tea light ovens: “The effect of – mostly self-made – tea light ovens is very controversial and the risk of the wax spontaneously igniting is very high.”

Christmas tree stand – observe the 3-S rule: secure stand, rope pull and safety seal

“A Christmas tree stand should always be adapted to the size of the tree so that there is sufficient counterweight and the tree does not tip over,” explains Berthold Tempel from TÜV Rheinland. An integrated water container is also recommended. It provides additional stability and supplies the Christmas tree with water. Information about the appropriate tree size can be found on the product packaging. Stands with all-round single rope technology and integrated safety claws ensure that the tree stands securely. The fixation mechanism should be operated via a foot lever system and should also be able to be locked against accidental activation.

GS seal Tested safety

By the way: If a product bears the GS “Tested Safety” seal, this means that the manufacturer has also subjected its product to a voluntary, comprehensive safety test. TÜV Rheinland carries out corresponding tests in its test laboratories.
