No desire for shopping malls, pedestrian zones and lugging around bags:
Many consumers will continue to buy Christmas presents online in 2022
In a current representative survey of 1,005 people in Germany aged 16 and over commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, 76 percent said they would order their presents online this year. This means that the Corona effect from last year, when it was also 76 percent, continues. For comparison: In December 2020, 70 percent said they bought gifts online. In 2019 it was 61 percent.
“Shopping online has become second nature for many people, especially during the pandemic. This is now also noticeable in the Christmas business.”
Bianka Kokott, digital trading expert at Bitkom
Corona virus no longer plays a major role
However, concerns about the coronavirus, which over the past two years have been crucial for many people to avoid buying gifts in stores, now only play a minor role: only 23 percent of those who buy their Christmas presents online do so this as the reason.
A year ago, 71 percent of this group bought their Christmas presents online to minimize the risk of infection with the coronavirus. In contrast, 22 percent say that they only got used to online shopping during the corona pandemic and are therefore now buying Christmas presents online.
The most commonly cited reason, however, is that people want to avoid crowds in stores (62 percent), so that they can compare prices better (62 percent) or because many products are not available in nearby brick-and-mortar stores (34 percent). ). 31 percent also think: Prices online are often cheaper. A fifth (20 percent) find it easier to get gift ideas online.
