Christmas time: The federal police warn against pickpocketing

After their attacks, the thieves and their loot disappear into the crowd quickly and often undetected. The person stolen is left without their money or valuables.

In order not to become a victim, please remember: Pickpockets usually work in groups , often of four: the first one observes the surroundings, the second distracts the victim, the third steals and the fourth takes the loot and disappears into the crowd.

The tricks of pickpockets

Common methods of theft are the “ bump-in ”, the “ defiler ” or the “ false tourist ”.

For example, the “wrong tourist” asks for directions with a city map in his hand. While the victim gives information, an accomplice of the perpetrator usually pushes himself close to the victim, ostensibly in order to get a better look at the map. If you are distracted by explaining the route, the thief will attack unnoticed.

“Soilers,” on the other hand, “accidentally” spill a drink or stain the victim’s clothing with ketchup or mustard. The perpetrator then offers to clean the clothes in a friendly and helpful manner. Not only is the stain removed, but the wallet is also removed.

This is how you can protect yourself!

  • Store valuables in different and locked inner pockets.
  • Carry (hand) bags with the closed side facing your body.
  • Pay particular attention to your bags and valuables in crowds.
  • Be careful if someone comes close to you or bumps into you. Insist that the usual distance for strangers is maintained.
  • Pickpockets can often be recognized by their searching eyes. They don't look people in the eye, but rather scout for prey.
  • Only carry as much money and payment cards with you as is absolutely necessary.

Have you had a payment card stolen? Then act immediately!

  • Be sure to have your cards blocked immediately. This is possible by calling the nationwide blocking emergency number 116 116 for all Girocards and most credit cards.
  • Report the theft to the police. This can cause the electronic direct debit procedure to be blocked by signature (SEPA direct debits).
  • Check your account transactions and report unauthorized debits to your bank or savings bank.
