After taking a break for the summer tour, Circus Krone wants to bring its elephants back into the program for Christmas. Two of the current five crown elephants are to return to Munich from an animal residence in Spain, reports the German Press Agency.
Traditionally, circus director Jana Mandana Lacey-Krone personally presents the elephants, because they are Krone's heraldic animal.
In the spring, all the animals were brought to the Spanish residence “El Castillo de la Guardas”, where 54-year-old Mala and 36-year-old Kenya are to spend their retirement. The three other elephants, Bara, Burma and Aisha, were supposed to make it easier for them to get used to it. Bara and Burma are now scheduled to travel back to Munich for the winter program that traditionally starts on December 25th. An exact date for the transport has not yet been set. It has also not yet been decided whether both female elephants will be used.
The Bavarian Animal Rights Action Group is protesting against the plan. Taking the elephants out of the natural animal reserve and subjecting them to transport stress again is “animal cruelty of the highest degree,” says a statement from the action group. The journey from southern Spain to Munich takes several days. According to a circus spokesman, there are stops during which the elephants are unloaded in animal parks along the route to recover.
The long-term plan is to set up a resting place for the elephants at Lake Ammersee. The circus is currently waiting for a building permit.
