Violence, hatred on the internet and radicalization – these are the main police topics
on the “Civil Heroes” website!

Can police reach more people with crime prevention thanks to social media? The “Civil Heroes” platform is intended to provide the answers to this question by the end of the project in October 2019. Using the topics of violence in public spaces, online hatred and radicalization as examples, the research association wants to promote civilly courageous action and thereby contribute to increasing the security of the individual and society.

To do this, the researchers and the police work together to use interactive videos, music and other playful elements to deepen knowledge among the target group: young people and internet-savvy adults.

“We hope that the interactive videos and other cross-media elements on www.zivilehelden.de will have a greater learning effect for users,”
Stuttgart Media University and authentically translate the police’s serious messages Apparently in passing, we stage patterns of action that activate moral courage and thus shape safety-conscious behavior in an emergency.”

The amplifier for consolidating knowledge among users is communication in social networks about police topics. The concept is not new in many ways, but its combination of different successful approaches makes it unique in crime prevention in Germany.

“With Civilian Heroes, we are opening a new chapter in police crime prevention says Chief Criminal Officer Harald Schmidt, head of police crime prevention at the state and federal level. For the first time, the police crime prevention department can provide scientific support for a project from conception to execution. “We hope this will have an impact on all crime prevention work in German-speaking countries. We want to know whether we can convey our content to the population on social networks just as well or significantly better .” For the police, it is also about setting the course for future communication.

To implement a scientific concept, collaboration with a wide variety of disciplines is also necessary, e.g. B. necessary from the economy. The research network also includes the Internet agency Mosaiq, which carried out the interactive concept, interface design and technical implementation for Civilian Heroes. “For us as an agency, one question was particularly interesting. How do we manage to reach people emotionally with technology ,” explains Theodor Paxino, Managing Director of Mosaiq. “We can observe this particularly closely in the project thanks to the scientific support . This means we can focus on getting people excited about the topic of civil courage through a high-quality user experience.”

The concept for “Civil Heroes” was developed under the acronym “ÄrDiSiKo” (Preventive Digital Security Communication) by experts from media ethics, communication studies, criminology, law and economics. It will be further evaluated in the coming months.
