Cloud gaming is becoming increasingly established in Germany due to the ever-improving supply of fast internet. More than eight million gamers are already using corresponding services, as a joint study by the auditing and consulting firm PwC and game – Association of the German Games Industry shows. According to this, around a quarter of players spend more time with streamed games than with locally installed games.
Cloud gaming “has arrived in everyday life”
“Cloud gaming has become part of many people's everyday lives - even if the services are not yet consistently profitable on the provider side. In the long term, this will open up new sales channels, business models and collaboration opportunities in the cloud gaming ecosystem for the games market.”
PwC Germany analyst Werner Ballhaus
The market is currently dynamic and there is great competitive pressure. Established players would compete with tech companies, hardware manufacturers and start-ups.
Cloud game service increasingly popular
19 percent of those surveyed have already tried a game service, twelve percent use such a service occasionally or regularly - especially people under 35 years of age. Every fourth person in this age group is a regular user. Some work similarly to Netflix and Co and give users access to a large game library for a monthly fee. Others only provide the powerful hardware in the cloud.
Push broadband expansion
A fast and stable internet connection is necessary for a smooth gaming experience in the cloud. However, this is still lacking in many places in Germany, as the study notes. For 64 percent of those surveyed, their home Internet connection is always or usually fast enough. However, eleven percent of players rarely or never achieve the required speeds. When it comes to mobile Internet connections, only about half of those surveyed always or most of the time achieve sufficiently fast connections.
“Cloud gaming is a significant innovation for the games industry. However, gaps in the availability of fast Internet are hindering the spread of the new sales channel. With a view to the future viability of the German games market, 5G and broadband expansion is therefore of immense importance.”
game managing director Felix Falk
