This weekend and especially on Monday it's that time again: the star singers are roaming around in many cities in Europe.
Whoever is visited is usually Catholic and receives a blessing and the doors receive (at least in Germany, Austria or Switzerland) the typical blessing C+M+B plus the year. This year that should be 20+ C+M+B +20. Depending on the region, the + can also vary and appear as *.
And so on Friday we sat in the pub in Vienna and talked about the star singers. I stated at this point that they would not visit me. The lady next to me looked at me a little dumbfounded and just asked if I didn't believe in anything.

Well, with a smile I said that I'm not Catholic. And then we figured out what the writing on the door meant. I was quickly informed that C+M+B stands for Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.
My smile continued to grow. At a table full of Catholics, no one objected. Except me, the non-Catholic. Because:
C+M+B is not interpreted as Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, but the abbreviation stands for “Christus mansionem benedicat”. The old Latin in me jumped for joy when I was able to directly provide the translation “Christ bless this (our) house” ( see also here ).

The term Christ is just the Latin form of the ancient Greek term Χριστός, which means something like “the anointed one”. But let's leave that alone, it's going too far.
C+M+B or K+M+B
There are also regions in Europe where a K is written instead of a C. This actually no longer stands for Christ, nor for Kaspar, but for Kyrios. Kyrios comes from classical Greek and means “Lord”.
Yes, and so it can happen that on a Friday evening in the pub in Vienna you don't just talk about the weather or politics, but also teach or learn a little something.
This might also be of interest:
“The Swedish Church makes God a neuter?!” Nope.
