A scam that is becoming more and more “fashionable”: You create a fake screenshot that claims that a certain medium reported this and then accuse this medium of spreading fake news. In 2020, the Tagesschau was accused of broadcasting an old picture of coffins (see HERE ), and recently an Italian broadcaster was accused of showing a scene from the film “Deep Impact” instead of refugees in Kiev (see HERE ).
And now it's hitting CNN: The news channel is said to have posted a photo of a hotel in Serbia and claimed that it was a destroyed hotel in Ukraine. However, the creator of the fake made a small mistake!

The fake screenshot

Several users on Twitter spread the alleged screenshot of the CNN tweet:

For the sake of order, here is the common screenshot again:

MIMIKAMA
The widespread screenshot

There is no date visible in the screenshot that was distributed, so it cannot be verified when CNN posted this photo. The tweet cannot be found in the CNN Breaking News Twitter feed (see HERE

How to recognize the fake

In fact, the photo in the screenshot shows an abandoned hotel in Serbia, several photos of which can be seen in a blog HERE However, when creating the fake screenshot, the creator made a small mistake that is not immediately noticeable: the corners!

Regardless of whether an article or a screenshot is posted in a tweet: the corners are always rounded. In everyone's fake screenshot, the corners of the image are square, not round.

Here's a comparison of the corners: The fake screenshot on the left, a real screenshot of a CNN tweet on the right:

MIMIKAMA
The corners are proof: the screenshot was faked

Apart from that, among the tweets from CNN Breaking News there is not a single tweet with flags or a hashtag and only very few tweets that post a photo in addition to a link to an article (like the one on the right in the comparison above), while the fake one is 3x contains the Ukrainian flag, a hashtag and no link, so it would be completely out of character for CNN.

Conclusion

It's clear from both the style and the corners of the photo that CNN never shared this photo on Twitter. It is a complete fake that was only fabricated to claim that CNN was spreading fake news... a certain ex-president of the USA would have enjoyed it.
