But not every tea is suitable for this type of preparation as cold brew tea. The reason for this: germs. The Bremen consumer advice center explains what is important.
Extensive offer
There is a wide range of products on the market: the cold-infused teas are available in powder form, as sticks or tea bags, both online and in stores. Wild mixtures promise a calorie-free and sugar-free alternative to traditional soft drinks. There are no limits to the flavors: classic varieties such as peach and lemon complement each other with watermelon, mint or cherry.
“Some manufacturers add sweeteners, flavors or even vitamins. In the market check, the Bremen consumer center took a close look at seven cold brew teas.

How safe are cold brew teas?
Especially in the summer months, special black teas, herbal and fruit tea blends from various manufacturers that are suitable for cold brewing are increasingly available. These tea blends are treated using a hot steam process to reduce the germ content. Therefore, they are more expensive than regular tea bags. The bitter substances and tannins only dissolve at high temperatures. This means the tea tastes milder.
“Some manufacturers still advise that this method of making tea is not recommended for infants and children because cold brew teas are usually based on black tea, which may contain caffeine.”
Jasmin Scholz, nutrition expert at the Bremen Consumer Center
Conventional herbal and fruit teas always have to be poured with boiling water. The reason: In some cases, germs such as bacteria, yeast or mold can be found in the plant products. If the water temperature is too low, germ-contaminated herbal or fruit teas could pose a health risk for infants, small children and sick people. After harvesting, the herbs and fruits are only dried but not treated with heat. Once cooled, they can be used as iced tea.
Not all cold brew tea is the same
The seven finished products contained twelve or 20 bags per pack and were priced between 2.50 euros and nine euros. A closer look at the list of ingredients is recommended. One manufacturer advertises a peach-passion fruit flavor. Numerous other fruits such as apples and rose hips come first. The peach and passion fruit taste comes from an aroma and not from the use of real fruit. When using the term “taste”, consumers should therefore take a closer look.
Another brand contains 77 percent black tea in its peach variety. The peach fruit pieces are at the very end here too. Only one of the seven products contains 100 percent black tea. Without flavors, sweeteners or fruit pieces. The remaining five types of tea were based on flavored fruit teas.
Don't forget to drink!
Whether water, cold brew tea, fruit spritzers or cooled herbal tea: drinking is especially important during the warm season.
“Prefer unsweetened drinks at room temperature. It should be one and a half to two liters of fluid every day to keep the body's water balance in balance."
Jasmin Scholz, nutrition expert at the Bremen Consumer Center
However, on hot days or during great exertion, the body needs more:
“Depending on body size and activity, the fluid requirement can increase three to four times.”
Jasmin Scholz, nutrition expert at the Bremen Consumer Center
If you don't drink enough, you can get headaches, dizziness, forgetfulness or confusion.
