What are cold chambers?
Ice saunas have become a real trend. The cold is said to help with regeneration after exercise, improve performance, relieve pain and boost the immune system. Top athletes and Hollywood stars swear by cryotherapy for regeneration. The cold initially leads to poorer blood flow to the muscles. But then the body ensures thermal balance and blood circulation throughout the body is stimulated. Some studies have also shown that the cold stimulates the immune system and helps improve performance. However, the number of test subjects was small, so the effects are not yet considered scientifically proven.
What happens in the cold chamber?
The skin is covered in receptors that register cold. When the skin temperature is below 10 degrees, the pain sensors are switched off. We know this, for example, from local anesthesia with cold. In the ice sauna, the skin temperature even drops to 5 to 0 degrees. But you have to stay in it for at least 2 minutes. Up to 3 minutes is recommended. The extremities are at risk, i.e. hands and fingers, feet, but also our ears. These areas are most likely to get frostbite because the body's primary goal is to keep the center as warm as possible to protect the vital organs.
Cold chambers for rheumatism treatment
Prices for a cold chamber visit from private providers start at around 20 euros. But hospitals also offer so-called cryotherapy for their patients. Cold therapy is used in many clinics to treat painful chronic inflammatory diseases. Rheumatism patients in particular benefit from this because the pain-free condition afterwards enables movements in physiotherapy that would otherwise not be possible due to the pain. This in turn leads to a long-term improvement in mobility, less pain and a reduction in rheumatism medication. Some studies even provide evidence that cold also has an effect on inflammation.
