In recent days, a strange image depicting a head has fascinated and frightened Facebook users. This image is not a work of art and was not created using AI. It is the face of an unknown woman whose fate is still a mystery. Cologne's Cold Cases Unit renews its search for the identity of a murdered stranger. She is one of 22 women whose murder cases remain unsolved in Germany and whose identities still remain unknown.
The Cologne public prosecutor's office and the Cologne criminal police ask for your help! On October 14, 2001, an almost completely skeletonized female corpse was found by a mushroom collector in the Worringer Bruch moor area on the outskirts of Cologne. It was there between four months and a year. To date, the woman has not been identified.
The Cold Cases Unit of the Cologne Police
The Cologne Police Cold Cases Unit is today reopening the files of one of these unsolved murder cases from 2001. This step is part of the Europe-wide “Identify Me” campaign launched by the Federal Criminal Police Office. At the center of this initiative are 22 murder cases in which the names of the murdered women are still unknown to this day.
The case, which is now being re-investigated, revolves around a young woman whose body was found on October 14, 2001 by a mushroom picker in the “Worringer Bruch” moor area. At this point, the skeletal body had lain undiscovered in the swamp area for several months.
Despite intensive investigative work by the homicide squad at the time and a facial reconstruction that is now making the rounds on Facebook, the woman's identity has not been clarified to this day. The newly released image is the result of this reconstruction and is now being shared again in the hopes that someone will recognize the woman.
The work of the Cold Cases Unit and the “Identify Me” campaign is crucial. Not only to seek justice for the victims, but also to find answers for the loved ones who may still be waiting for news. In a world where we are more connected than ever before, the distribution of this image could be the game-changer in a two-decade-old case.
Anyone with information about the woman's identity is asked to contact the Cologne police or the Federal Criminal Police Office. Any clue, no matter how small, could help solve the case and give the unknown woman her name back.
Today, more than two decades later, there remains hope that the truth will emerge. And perhaps this picture making the rounds on Facebook can help solve a long-standing mystery and find justice for a woman who has gone without a name or story for too long.
