Before we begin today's disgusting fraud story about "Commissioner Weber", the police would like to make a few things clear:
- Here in Germany you will very rarely end up in custody after a fatal traffic accident! Unless you caused it intentionally.
- Here in Germany you have no possibility of buying yourself out of pre-trial detention with bail!
- We will certainly not discuss such pre-trial detention with your relatives over the phone! We don't even decide, it's the public prosecutor's office that does it.
to shed light on shock calls like those from “Commissioner Weber”.
Because fraudsters use these stories to repeatedly get their hands on the savings of people in Dortmund and Lünen. And this not only causes immense financial damage, but also leaves people - mostly older - full of self-doubt and insecurity. Who have to report a crime to their detriment to us.
Just yesterday, officers from the Dortmund police had to take up another case like this. An 83-year-old woman from Dortmund-Wickede was affected. In the afternoon she received a call from an “Inspector Weber”. He informed her that her son had caused a fatal traffic accident and that he was now threatened with pre-trial detention. The only way out: his mother could protect him from this with a large amount of money.
What followed was what many victims of this scam have already experienced: in a manipulative manner and with a lot of pressure, the 83-year-old was asked to pick up valuables from her locker and hand them over to someone who would pick them up. The inspector contacted the woman several times until she finally complied with the request and, after visiting the bank, handed the valuables over to an unknown woman around 4:30 p.m.
The police are now looking for witnesses who observed the handover and/or the person picking it up and who can provide further information about the woman and her escape.
It is described as follows:
- approx. 25 to 30 years old,
- approx. 175 cm tall,
- Slim stature,
- dark blonde hair,
- wearing black leather pants and a dark tailored jacket
- and was carrying a brown handbag.

In addition to what we said at the beginning of this message, we also have the following tips for you:
- If you are asked about your financial circumstances or asked for money on the phone - no matter who - we advise you:
end the conversation as quickly as possible! - Whoever has a serious concern - for example a family member - will understand if you want to call back or ask for a personal conversation.
- The fraudsters are currently extremely active again. Various attempts are reported to our control center every day. Our appeal therefore goes out to all younger people: talk to older relatives, acquaintances and friends! Keep telling them about such scams and make them strong against these criminals!
