Confused users have alerted us to a specific scam. The bait – tempting prizes in competitions – often serves as a trap to lure users into paid contracts.

The game with hope

Users repeatedly report to us about unexpected contracts that they have concluded by participating in supposed competitions. The story is always the same: a phone call, the promise of an attractive prize, and suddenly they are locked into a contract. Because what they don't know: Participation is not free. However, users only receive this information later, either through a confirmation of participation including an invoice in the mailbox or through unexpected debits to their accounts.

Our tips

We at Mimikama recommend: If you find yourself in such a situation, dispute the conclusion of the contract and ask for proof. Contracts entered into through a competition are only legally binding if they are confirmed in writing after the telephone call.

The Lower Saxony Consumer Center also reports on this scam and has written a sample letter (PDF) that can help you request such proof. Use this opportunity to protect your rights.

Prevent and act

Since such calls are only permitted with explicit consent, ask where the caller had permission to contact you. If it turns out that it was an unauthorized call, report it to the Federal Network Agency.

  • Never give out personal information over the phone.
  • If you already notice unwanted debits on your account, inform your bank immediately and prohibit the provider from making further debits.
