KOOPERATIVE Berlin developed the game as part of the “Democracy on the Net” funding program of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb). The browser-based game is primarily aimed at young people between the ages of 15 and 19 and has a preventative nature. With “Conspiracy Virus” we want to sensitize the target group to conspiracy stories and their effects through a playful quiz approach. Players can find out how receptive they are to or “immune” to conspiracy theories.
How do you recognize a conspiracy story? That is the core question of the browser-based game “Conspiracy Virus,” which goes online on Thursday, November 24, 2022. It is aimed at young people between 15 and 19 years old. The game was developed by KOOPERATIVE Berlin.
“Conspiracy Virus” promoted by bpb
The project is funded by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (BPB) as part of the “Democracy on the Internet” funding program. “Conspiracy Virus” is a prevention game that introduces young people to conspiracy stories and the dangers they pose in a critical and target-group-appropriate manner. The players are given ten questions and theses from different subject areas (society, climate, politics and much more).
Under time pressure, they have to decide: is it a conspiracy theory? Or is the statement presented true? After all the questions have been played, the players are shown their “immunity”. Are you already well protected against the conspiracy virus? Or do you need a booster? Each individual question is evaluated at the end of the game and supported with further information and sources. The players then have the opportunity to play the game again, share it with friends or compare themselves with others in the ranking.
background
The content and game logic of “Conspiracy Virus” were developed with advice from the Federal Agency for Civic Education, the Amadeu Antonio Foundation and the education and consulting team inMotion. Pupils from different school types were also included in the development phase. “This exchange was very valuable for us,” says project manager Josephine Reinisch. “We were able to stay very close to the target group, especially with regard to the language as well as the look and aesthetics of the game. And we now hope that other young people will also like the result!”. The game will be available from Thursday at www.conspiracy-virus.de . A Telegram channel is also available for ongoing information: https://t.me/conspiracyvirus
