We keep receiving reports that scammers have been successful with the shock call scam. But at the same time, people are also attentive and can ward off scams. Here are two current examples.
Scam with shock calls successful in Braunschweig
The Braunschweig police are investigating a case against con artists who caused extensive property damage.
On Tuesday morning, a 69-year-old woman from Braunschweig received a call with a blocked number. A man answered who claimed to be her son. This man spoke excitedly and in a tearful voice, so the woman assumed it was actually her son. In the short phone call, the alleged son reported that he had caused a traffic accident in which a pregnant woman was fatally injured and left two young children behind. A classic shock call.
Always relatives in a supposed emergency situation
A woman then took over the conversation, identifying herself as “Police Officer White”. The son was now in a state of shock that he was no longer able to continue speaking. The “policewoman” further explained that the son was at the police station on Münzstrasse and was being taken into custody. Release is only possible upon payment of a bail amounting to several tens of thousands of euros. If she had high-quality jewelry or gold bars available, she could also provide these valuables as a deposit.
First cook until soft, then rip off
Shock call successful: When the supposed police officer noticed that the 69-year-old was shocked by this fraudulent story and believed the information, this woman gave her concrete instructions:
She absolutely has to stay on the phone and maintain the connection, drive to the bank and withdraw the requested amount and hand the cash over to another person in downtown Braunschweig. The fraudster warned her to maintain secrecy and that she was not allowed to talk about this matter, even with her husband. In response to critical questions from the attentive employees at her bank, the woman from Braunschweig explained that she needed the large amount of money to buy a car.
Dubious handover modalities
With the money in her pocket, the woman went to the agreed handover location in downtown Braunschweig. Between the pharmacy on Südstrasse and the bicycle shop Am Bruchtor, a woman she did not know identified herself and had previously been described to her. The money was handed over without a word, whereupon the unknown woman left on foot towards Güldenstrasse.
Contrary to the announcement that her son would be released and brought to her at the handover point, another caller announced after a while that she could go home again. The police would then bring her son to her if she requested.
The conversation with the fraudsters continued on her cell phone until the 69-year-old returned home. Only now did she have the opportunity to tell her husband about what had happened. Together they recognized the fraud through a shock call and called the police.
The police asks for help
The police have started an investigation and are asking witnesses who saw the money being handed over on Tuesday afternoon to contact the police on 0531/476-2516.
The person collecting the money is described as:
The victim had long blonde hair and was wearing a striking pink top.
The police are particularly interested in: Was the contact between the two women on Südstrasse/corner of Am Bruchtor observed? Did the person collecting the money later get into a vehicle in the Güldenstrasse area? ( HERE )
Fake police officers fail in Soest
Here is an example of a failed shock call scam attempt. On Wednesday, unknown perpetrators called a senior woman over 80 years old. They told of an accident in which the elderly lady's daughter caused an accident in which someone died. The senior was then able to speak to her “daughter” briefly. However, she could hardly get a word out because she was crying. The alleged policewoman demanded EUR 38,000.
The victim then drove to a branch of her bank to collect the money. Since the branch didn't have that much cash on site, the senior citizen was sent to the bank's main office. In the meantime, the bank employee informed the victim's family. The son was able to meet his mother at the bank's headquarters and explain the fraud to her. A big weight fell off the lady's heart because the story about her daughter wasn't true. ( HERE )
Police request: inform older people about the shock call scam
“Don’t get tired of informing older citizens about this scam,” was the request from the Soest police.
The unscrupulous perpetrators always manage to make older citizens worry about their families and thus steal all their savings. ( HERE )
