Since 2022, consumers have had the legal option to terminate contracts on a monthly basis with automatic contract extensions. These include contracts in the area of online dating or magazine subscriptions. At the same time, providers of digital goods such as smartphones or smart TVs have an obligation to provide their customers with regular software updates.

Consumer advice center checks compliance with consumer rights

In a sample, the Bavarian Consumer Advice Center checked 29 providers from various sectors for compliance with these rights.

“In most cases, the new regulations have been implemented. However, we see a fundamental need for improvement in informing consumers about the new mandatory software updates.”

Tatjana Halm, lawyer at the Bavarian Consumer Center

The sample made it clear that it is often not clear how users find out about updates and get them.

Consequences drawn

After this investigation, a total of four providers were warned.

The sample is carried out as part of the federal project “Economic Consumer Protection”, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
