At the end of the mail, Facebook informed its users via the notification function that the “Contacts you trust” function would be discontinued. But why do these trust contacts exist or were they there in the first place?

Trusted Contacts are friends you choose who can help you if you ever have problems accessing your account. These can help you if you ever lock yourself out of your Facebook account. After you select your friends, they can send you a recovery code with a special URL that you can use to regain access to your account.
