Therefore, only send copies of ID cards if it is absolutely necessary. If there is no other option, you should add a watermark to the copy of your ID. Our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet shows how you can easily create a watermark.

What is a watermark?

A watermark is text that is placed over a document.
In the case of a copy of the ID, the watermark contains the information that it is a copy, the purpose and the recipient of the copy as well as the date. This ensures that your ID copy is not misused or used for another purpose. Example of wording: Copy of ID for registration at Musterbank, October 31, 2022.

How do I create a watermark?

We'll show you two easy ways to create a watermark.

With your smartphone

If you take a photo of your ID card with your smartphone, you can create the watermark directly on your smartphone using the photo editing program. You can either type the text or add the watermark using the brush tool.

With Paint

You can also create watermarks in Paint, a program that comes preinstalled on your Windows device by default.

  1. Open Paint.
  2. Click “File” and “Open.”
  3. Select the copy.
  4. Click on the “A” and type the text. If necessary, set a larger font size and choose a clearly visible font color.
  5. Place the watermark.
  6. Click “File” and select “Save As.”
  7. Save the image as jpg or png.

Black out unnecessary information

Make data (e.g. your signature or document number) unrecognizable on the copy of your ID.

You can do this in Paint with the eraser tool by simply painting over the respective field by hand. Select the eraser icon and the appropriate “line width”.
