Crizpy: Let's put social media where it's most fun.

Between 2014 and 2015, an oceanic heat wave killed between 50 and 90 percent of the corals around Hawaii. Water temperatures had risen 7 degrees above average across the Pacific. Scientists were caught off guard by the phenomenon. As water temperatures rise, coral reefs change color. Algae, which are responsible for the colorful color, disappear and leave behind the white corals.

With the help of satellite images, scientists are now able to accurately map the temperatures in coral reefs. But there is one thing they cannot tell from the pictures: the progress of the bleaching process or coral death.

A new heat wave occurred this year. Not as strong as the one in 2015, but long-lasting and just as fatal for the corals. There are not enough marine scientists to document the deaths. That's why they have now turned to the public. With the help of an online tool, divers and swimmers can now document the condition of the corals. The researchers then compare the satellite data with the volunteers' reports and hope to create a kind of early warning system for impending coral deaths. At the same time, they want to breed resistant coral species in order to respond to warming seas.
