Is it alien goo? Is it an animal? Or is it a computer-animated video? Unfortunately, this video, which has been shared thousands of times, does not answer the questions. We have therefore started a small fact check. The result: This is neither an animal nor an animated video. Rather, it is part of an animal.

The cordworm's trunk

The cordworm (Nemertea) is one of the ancestral mouths. There are over 1200 different species of the worm, which is why they sometimes look different. However, the trunk of these worms is tough!

Because this trunk will be extended both for exploring the surroundings and for hunting! This means that the worm can perceive its surroundings via its proboscis.

And he can hunt with it, because the trunk of a cordworm can release a powerful neurotoxin that affects invertebrates. People tend not to be affected by this ( compare ).

In another video you can clearly see how the worm retrieves its trunk after it has extended it over a surface. Here you can now clearly see the anatomical parallels to the original video shown above.

A trunk without a cordworm?

However, in the video above you can see the trunk without the worm. However, if you look closely here, you can see that the trunk retreats to a specific spot in the mud, where its fixed point is.

In other words: the worm is in the mud. The trunk protrudes from the mud at this point and reacts to human touch. At first the worm tries to pull back its trunk, but after the stranger touches it, it stretches it out again.
