For two years now, much of the media reporting has been dominated by the corona pandemic. Nevertheless, the population in Germany does not feel equally informed about all aspects of the coronavirus. This is shown by the results of the current BfR Corona Monitor - a regular survey by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

Currently only 49 percent of the population feel well informed about the current measures, 28 percent rate themselves as not well informed. However, people rate their level of information about the current vaccination recommendations higher: 64 percent say they are well informed about them. “In this context, we also see differences between different age groups,” says BfR President Professor Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel. “For example, those aged 60 and over feel best informed about the current vaccination recommendations for the coronavirus, while those under 40 feel best informed about its symptoms

There are also differences in the population's sense of security. The abolition of the home office requirement on March 20th is already making itself felt: While in the last survey in mid-March, 34 percent rated the risk of infection in the workplace as high, this has now increased to 39 percent. They also feel less safe on the way to work: 60 percent currently rate the risk of infection on public transport as high - six percentage points more than two weeks ago. However, the assessment of the risk of infection in catering establishments (35 percent) and in everyday shops (24 percent) remained largely unchanged.

To protect themselves from infection with the coronavirus, those surveyed continue to rely on hygiene. 94 percent say they have worn masks in the past two weeks, 71 percent have washed their hands more thoroughly and 54 percent have used disinfectants more frequently. On the other hand, the respondents restricted themselves less in their leisure time behavior: 37 percent said they had left their home less in the last 14 days.

About the BfR Corona Monitor

The BfRR Corona Monitor is a recurring (multi-wave) representative survey on the risk perception of the population in Germany towards the novel coronavirus. Between March 24 and May 26, 2020, around 500 randomly selected people were interviewed by telephone every week about, among other things, their assessment of the risk of infection and their protective measures. Since June 2020, the survey has been continued every two weeks with around 1,000 respondents each time. A summary of the data is regularly published on the homepage of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. More information about the method and sample can be found in the publications on the BfR Corona Monitor.

About the BfR

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is a scientifically independent institution within the scope of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). It advises the federal government and the federal states on food, chemical and product safety issues. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely related to its assessment tasks.
