The project team made up of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Deutsche Telekom and SAP has released version 2.23 of the Corona Warning App (CWA). With the update, users can renew technically expired certificates via the CWA.

Corona-Warn-App reports via Twitter that you can now renew the “technical” validity of expired vaccination and recovery certificates directly via the Corona-Warn-App:

limited to 365 days - regardless of the technical validity . The first CWA users are currently receiving a message telling them to renew their certificate. With version 2.23 you can do this directly via the CWA.

Important : There are various reasons for limiting the technical validity of certificates, for example with regard to IT security. However, it is independent of the technical validity of the certificates from a medical or epidemiological perspective.

The CWA automatically informs users before their recovery and vaccination certificates expire . You then have up to 90 days after the expiry of the technical validity to renew the certificate by tapping on the note “Renew certificate” in the certificate area of the app. After you have given your consent, the certificate will be automatically replaced. The technically expired certificate is moved to the trash.

Users can renew both recovery and vaccination certificates. The CWA automatically informs you which certificates are eligible.

Certificates of recovery can always be technically renewed if they are in danger of expiring. With vaccination certificates, users only need to extend the certificate they are currently using, as it contains sufficient information about vaccination protection. For users who have stored three vaccination certificates in the CWA, this means, for example: the vaccination certificate for the first and second vaccination will not be exchanged, but only the vaccination certificate for the booster vaccination as soon as it threatens to expire.

Test certificates will not be renewed because they are technically not valid for that long anyway.

A technically expired certificate can only be renewed three times. If users have stored their certificate in the CWA on several devices, they can only renew it on three devices. However, you have the option of exporting the newly issued certificate as a PDF file so that you can scan the certificate's QR code again if necessary. Version 2.23, like previous versions, will be rolled out to all users gradually over 48 hours. iOS users can now manually download the current app version from the Apple Store. The Google Play Store does not offer any option to initiate a manual update. The new version of the Corona warning app will be available to users here within the next 48 hours.

You can find current information on the status of the roll-out on the #coronawarnapp .
