Others warn to protect themselves: 37 percent of people in Germany continue to use the Corona warning app. Another 17 percent used or downloaded the app in the past, but have since uninstalled it. This is the result of a representative survey of 1,144 people in Germany aged 16 and over, which was carried out by Bitkom eV, the industry association for the German information and telecommunications industry.
The majority of users want to use the Corona warning app for longer
Accordingly, the majority of current users are in favor of continuing to operate the Corona warning app for a longer period of time. 61 percent agree with the statement that the app should be further developed and provided with updates beyond the spring. The federal government is currently planning to continue operating the app until the end of May 2023. A third (32 percent) of users say the Corona warning app has specifically helped them protect themselves or others from infection with the corona virus.
“The Corona warning app is one of the most frequently used apps. The Corona warning app has proven itself and should continue to be available in the future.”
Bitkom Managing Director Dr. Bernhard Rohleder
Corona warning app on 9 out of 10 smartphones
According to the survey, 92 percent of users use the app on their smartphone to be warned or to warn others. 68 percent have saved their vaccination status in the app, even if this no longer plays a role in most places in Germany. And 7 percent use other functions of the app such as the diary or event registration.
According to official information, the Corona warning app has been downloaded almost 48 million times since its launch in June 2020. Around 55 million people aged 16 and over use a smartphone in Germany. 74 percent of all people in Germany aged 16 and over only realized how important digitalization is in the healthcare system in the wake of the Corona pandemic. 88 percent think: If the German health system was less bureaucratic, we would have gotten through the pandemic better.
Note on methodology
The information is based on a survey that Bitkom Research conducted on behalf of the digital association Bitkom. 1,144 people in Germany aged 16 and over were surveyed by telephone. The survey is representative. The question was: “Do you use the Corona warning app?” and “To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statements”.
