Berlin: BVG closes the front entrances on buses to minimize the likelihood of infection with SARS-CoV-2.

The BVG will close the front entrance to all buses from March 12, 2020

Ticket sales to drivers will therefore be temporarily restricted.
This is intended to minimize the likelihood of infection for both drivers and passengers.

The fact check

Note: Of course, every city has a different approach. This means that this is only limited to the Berlin area and does not necessarily apply elsewhere!

As the Berlin Traffic Information Center (VIZ) announced via Twitter, this is true. From March 12, 2020, it will no longer be possible to get on and off at the first door of all BVG buses:

The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) goes into more detail about this in a press release

From tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, 2020, boarding and alighting at the first door on all BVG buses will be suspended until further notice. This is intended to minimize the likelihood of infection when selling tickets and the associated exchange of money for both drivers and all passengers.

Since this obviously does not mean that the ticket requirement has been lifted, the BVG asks its bus passengers to use the options available both electronically and in advance or to purchase a ticket when changing to other means of public transport.

Dr. Rolf Erfurt, Director of Operations at BVG:

“We are convinced that our passengers will understand this measure recommended by experts.

It serves to limit the risk of infection for passengers and driving staff. In this way, we want to help ensure that our city remains mobile even in this difficult phase.”

Using the screens of the Berlin Window in the subways, among other things, the BVG is calling on its passengers to use buses and trains with particular caution. This includes the well-known behavioral recommendations from the health authorities, for example coughing and sneezing into the crook of your arm.

This approach has been coordinated with both the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, which is responsible for Berlin public transport, and with the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprises, which chairs the supervisory board.

The BVG also recommends the following measures:

• Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds
• When coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or a paper handkerchief
• If possible, avoid touching your face and avoid shaking hands
