If the owner is not allowed to go out, what happens to the dog? Clearly: he has to go.

Coronavirus / COVID 19 - Quarantine: What dog owners should know now - The most important thing to start with: If you are unable to leave the house due to illness, you must find a replacement to get the dog out the door. Friends, family and neighbors are in demand.

What do I do with my dog if I'm not allowed out?

In connection with the coronavirus, this is also a point that should be considered.
Dogs are usually walked several times a day. They need movement and must be able to release themselves. Of course, this also applies in the event of a possible quarantine due to coronavirus disease. If this occurs, you have to find someone to walk the dog.

Home quarantine

DOGnews reports that lawmakers can quarantine people suspected of having SARS-CoV-2 at home.
This so-called “home isolation” means that you are not allowed to leave your home. Similar to Austria, home quarantine in Germany only affects dog owners if they do not have a garden.
If you live in an apartment, you have to find someone to take your four-legged friend for a walk. The local health authority has the final say. Basically, his assessment of the individual situation applies.

Country-dependent regulations

Austria: Anyone who is in “home isolation” is not allowed to leave the apartment.
Not even for walking your four-legged friend. The Austrian Animal Welfare Association recommends: “To be on the safe side, dog owners should look for a suitable care center or person in advance who could take care of the animal in the event of an infection with Corona.” This is not a recommendation but a “must”.

Ruth Jily from the Vienna Veterinary Office explains: “The instructions of the state health authority must be followed. Dog owners need alternative care for their pet.”

Germany: Infection protection there is largely a matter for the federal states. That is why the responsible health authority orders quarantine. It assesses the situation and then decides how to proceed. Those affected are usually quarantined at home, or simply house arrest.

You can't just say "no". Quarantine may also take place against the will of those affected, as the protection of the general public outweighs that of personal freedom. The Federal Ministry of Health emphasizes that quarantine can be ordered “if there is obvious suspicion”. If the person concerned refuses, the decision can be enforced in court, and the police can also be called in. Violations of an ordered quarantine can be punished with a fine or even a prison sentence.

Alternative litter box?

Patricia Both, an expert at the Martin Rütter dog school in Kassel, believes that the litter box is not an alternative.
Dogs are taught from an early age that the house is taboo for various businesses, and now they should suddenly be allowed to do so? Dogs also do not accept the litter box immediately, if at all. The larger the dog, the more difficult this alternative is to implement.

If you have a garden, your dog can get some exercise here. However, this is not a permanent solution either.

Basically, you should take care of organizing someone else from your family, friends or even neighbors to take you on the daily walk.

Meaningful indoor activity

To prevent “cabin fever” from creeping in, it is also important to provide something to do within the apartment.
This risk exists especially in dogs that are used to being outside a lot. You can challenge and keep your four-legged friend occupied with intelligence or search games. Even small training units can be easily implemented within your own four walls.

Dogs do not transmit the current coronavirus

However, you don't have to be afraid that your four-legged friend will get or transmit SARS-CoV-2. There is a case where a dog's snout tested mildly positive in Hong Kong, but virologist Jonathan Ball gives the all-clear. He assumes a random measurement and speaks of unnecessary hysteria.
