a separate article regarding the WHO announcements !

A voice message shared on WhatsApp claims that ibuprofen worsens symptoms of COVID-19.

The voice message states that research was being carried out on the new coronavirus at the University Hospital of Vienna and that there is evidence that ibuprofen allows the virus to multiply more quickly.

“A friend of mine is at the university hospital in Vienna and she called me today and they did a bit of research into why there were so many, such severe corona cases in Italy and found that the people who were with "We were admitted to the clinic with these severe symptoms, more or less everyone had taken ibuprofen at home before, and then they brought the virus and ibuprofen together in the laboratory, and there is very strong evidence that ibuprofen accelerates the replication of the virus."

It's a hoax!

As the Medical University of Vienna reports , this is fake news:

"Danger! WhatsApp text and voice messages are currently being spread on various social media networks, reporting on alleged research results from the “Vienna University Hospital” regarding the use of ibuprofen and an alleged increase in Covid19 symptoms.

We would like to expressly point out that this is fake news and has no connection with MedUni Vienna!”

“Maybe there’s something to it and they’re hiding something!”

Then let's just approach things logically:

When you have pain, for example due to inflammation, messenger substances called prostaglandins . On the one hand, these cause the typical external appearance characteristics such as redness and swelling, but they also irritate the nerve endings that transmit pain signals to the brain.

Ibuprofen does nothing other than limit the production of these messenger substances, which reduces redness and swelling, fewer or no pain signals are transmitted to the brain, and it also has an antipyretic effect.

way, not only ibuprofen works , but also other non-opioid painkillers, including aspirin, which is recommended instead in the voice message.

Based on the way they work, other non-opioid painkillers would also have to trigger the effect!

The Medical University of Vienna also operates a Center for Virology , where basic virological research, applied medical-virological research and virus diagnostics are carried out.

However, it is more than unlikely that research on the new coronavirus will be carried out there “just like that”, as a high-security laboratory is required, especially for SARS-CoV-2.

Addition March 14, 2020 8:00 p.m

As “ Welt ” and “ Bayerischer Rundfunk ” report, French Health Minister Olivier Véran on Twitter against taking anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, cortisone, ...).

He does not name a source, but is probably based on an article in the journal “ The Lancet ” from March 11th.
2020. In that article, doctors point out that drugs that inhibit the cell receptor ACE could potentially worsen the course of Covid-19.

Specifically, it is about the disease progression of 32 patients in China with elevated blood pressure and diabetes mellitus who took medications that inhibit the cell receptor ACE.

Important : Doctors hypothesize that treating such patients with thiazolidinediones and ibuprofen can increase the progression of the disease.

We are therefore initially only dealing with a hypothesis, which is clearly pointed out in the specialist magazine and that more research is needed to confirm or refute that hypothesis.

It is therefore still far too early to warn against medications such as ibuprofen and thereby cause even more uncertainty!

If newer information becomes available in this regard, we will update the article accordingly.

Conclusion

The claim that ibuprofen increases the replication of SARS-CoV-2 has no scientific basis, but there is no evidence that ibuprofen specifically increases the replication of the virus.

Therefore, it is an unproven claim spread through hearsay. Of course, many patients will have actually taken ibuprofen before, as it is a very common active ingredient, but one cannot conclude from this that it is also to blame for more severe symptoms - to put it bluntly: those patients probably also drank water, but that does not mean that Water is to blame.

If such a “secret” study actually took place, it is absolutely not scientifically tenable without further testing and should therefore not be further disseminated as fact.
