Apparently the source of the new coronavirus has now been determined: bat soup.

The most important thing about the coronavirus in bat soup:

  1. It is claimed that the carrier of the new coronavirus is bat soup
  2. However, bats are not an everyday food in China
  3. The video that was distributed is from 2016 and was not even made in China

English tabloid media, but also German sites such as “ Men’s Matter report that bats are most likely the original carriers of the new coronavirus, and that people were infected through bat soup, which, according to the impression, is a common dish in China.

The source of the claim

Two events are linked from many sides: the outbreak of 2019-nCoV and the video of a Chinese influencer who was filmed eating bat soup, including an entire bat.

The fact is that in China, eating smaller mammals such as bats is not uncommon in some parts of the country, but it is not commonplace either. If anything, we are dealing with a massive generalization. In Indonesia and Malaysia, on the other hand, bat dishes more common

So far, however, there is no evidence that the new coronavirus even came from bats, only indications that it could . Although there are similarities to the coronaviruses that already spread SARS and MERS and originated in bats, snakes cannot be ruled out .

The video wasn't even made in China

Wang Mengyun is a Chinese influencer who recorded the video in 2016 and posted it in 2017. It was created in Palau, an archipelago in the western Pacific, when she and her team filmed a tourism video and tried some local dishes, including bat soup. But due to the coronavirus outbreak, the video went viral and Wang Mengyun has since deleted it.

Conclusion

Even though smaller mammals are eaten in some parts of China, bat is rarely on the menu, but it is a rather exotic dish even for Chinese people, which is why that Chinese influencer included it when she ate bat in a restaurant in Palau in 2016.

The actual origin of the new coronavirus is not yet clearly understood, nor is it how it was transmitted from animals to humans. Articles that already believe the origin of the virus should not be viewed as serious.
