In order to protect risk groups - especially older people and people with previous illnesses - a rethink is now required.

Coronavirus: Stop bringing the children to grandma and grandpa – The most important thing to start with:

The peak of Covid-19 has not yet been reached. In order not to cause the health system to collapse and avoid a high death rate, protecting risk groups is now necessary and sensible.

Peak not yet reached

The peak of Covid-19 has not yet been reached in Germany. Experts assume there will be many deaths, which is why it is now even more important to protect risk groups.

Based on the current figures, we know that around four out of five infections with Covid-19 are mild.
However, this also shows that it affects a sick person more severely. Pneumonia usually results, and in some cases the new coronavirus leads to death. There are no reliable figures regarding the death rate yet, but scientists assume that it is higher than with influenza.

Protect risk groups

Since the beginning of the epidemic, it has become clear that some risk groups are particularly at risk. This mainly concerns older people and people with previous illnesses. In order to prevent a high death rate in Germany and to prevent the health system from collapsing, it is now important to particularly protect risk groups.

“If you don't take this seriously, you have to assume that there will be death rates in the range of 20 to 25 percent among the risk groups,” said virologist Christian Drosten from the Berlin Charité to NDR.

Who is the risk group?

All information about Covid-19 is based on experiences from China. The first thousand or so deaths were examined and evaluated by scientists there. Chinese authorities have now published the data .

Age: The findings from this show that the risk of a severe course of coronavirus disease increases steadily from the age of 50.
People aged 80 and over are particularly at risk here, which is because the immune system no longer reacts as well to pathogens and fights against them. There is also no medication against the virus yet, only the symptoms are treated. To put it simply, the immune system has to fight the virus itself without medical support.

Pre-existing illnesses: People who already have an underlying illness such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory system disease or cancer are particularly at risk. In people with these previous illnesses, Covid-19 often seems to be severe, regardless of age.

If a person has several risk factors, the risk of a severe course of the disease is significantly higher.

Gender: According to initial figures, infection with the coronavirus is more dangerous for men than for women. A clear justification for this is still missing.

RKI boss Lothar Wieler said at a press conference. "No one knows. It could also be a distortion."

Pregnant women and children

According to current knowledge, pregnant women and children are not considered to be at risk. There is also no evidence of an increased risk for the unborn during pregnancy. According to Drosten, “the virus would have to multiply in the blood in order to be transmitted to the child, and it doesn’t look as if that would be the case.”
