Science compared to esotericism and conspiracy theories. A difficult topic in the case of the complex development of the new coronavirus.

Coronavirus: The types of ignorance - The most important thing to start with: Scientists versus conspiracy theorists: Both groups don't know everything - the difference is that some are aware of it and others are sure that they know everything.

The lack of knowledge about coronavirus

It doesn't sound satisfactory at first, as you can assume that you won't get all the information you need.
But it is important to decide what ignorance is involved.

“Stupid” ignorance

Conspiracy theorists and esotericists are in high season. On the one hand, you hear that there is no epidemic, that everything has been invented to distract from the dangerous 5G radiation or another wave of refugees. On the other hand, it is said to be a targeted bioweapon.

Miracle remedies such as ointments and powders are offered for sale and long-distance healings are conjured up. – It is dangerous to rely on such means and therefore ignore the generally applicable precautionary measures.

US President Trump probably also acts according to the motto “There are no stupid questions” and asks his experts whether the flu vaccination would help against the new coronavirus. At least a bit. In 2018, he separated from his pandemic response team and did not replace it.

“Smart” ignorance

Those who know nothing, but pretend to know everything and have all the solutions at hand, are opposed to the scientists: those who have been dealing with viruses for a long time, analyzing them, simulating the spread of diseases, and carrying out research in order to be able to make useful probabilistic forecasts .
They mostly operate in the background; their voices are not heard as “loudly” as those of the faith healers. They know that they don't know everything yet.

At the moment, even the most prominent experts cannot yet say exactly what will happen. The spread of the virus is too complex. For many it is therefore difficult to understand that there are no concrete and absolutely safe recommendations for action here.

How do you really act?

Healthy realism is required.
A difficult request with so many unclear factors and the prevailing uncertainty. It would be just as inadvisable to make light of the situation in order to avoid unpleasant restrictions and measures as to panic and paint the devil on the wall.

At least science gives us useful information about how we should behave. So once again: reduce contacts, avoid crowds, wash your hands and stay calm.
