Google has set up an SOS alert system for the coronavirus. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook have also made adjustments.

Coronavirus: This is how Facebook, Twitter and Google react! – The most important thing at the beginning:

The internet giants are reacting to the coronavirus and taking action. Google activated an SOS system to provide information together with the WHO. Facebook and Twitter rely on information from verified sources.

Activities due to the coronavirus

Major events are canceled. Google canceled its developer conference Google I/O, as it previously did with the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2020). Facebook also canceled the F8 developer conference. Nvidia's Games Developer Conference GDC and GPU Technology Conference GTC were moved online and not held as planned.

More and more events are being canceled in Germany. Deutsche Bahn is therefore offering free ticket cancellations for customers who are not traveling because of the coronavirus.

Google: SOS system for the coronavirus

Google has now activated its SOS system for the coronavirus. Together with the WHO, the latest information on the virus is offered. However, only information that has been checked by Google employees and found to be relevant is displayed here. Search results for the term “coronavirus” are highlighted and displayed prominently in Google searches.

The information contains safety tips, background information and also news from the WHO.

Facebook: Information from verified sources

Facebook – like Twitter – now sorts information differently. The search prefers to show information from verified sources or partners. This avoids false reports about the virus being spread, although there are already more than enough of them in circulation. The search has also been adapted for the Facebook subsidiary Instagram.

Facebook also wants to make all data available so that scientists can optimize their simulations regarding spread and prediction.

Twitter: Information using the hashtag #coronavirus

Twitter provides trusted partner links under the hashtag #coronavirus. These are already available in the following countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, USA, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain and Vietnam.
