Success for the counterfeit money investigators: ZCB and BLKA managed to identify a suspect who is said to have traded counterfeit money on Facebook.
Bamberg/Munich/Herrsching: In November of this year, officials from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office discovered that counterfeit money was being offered for sale in a closed Facebook group.
After links to Bavaria were identified in this context, the counterfeit money central office responsible in the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office took over the further investigations under the direction of the Bavarian Cybercrime Central Office set up at the Bamberg Public Prosecutor's Office.
Suspect in custody
In the course of the following extensive investigations, a 23-year-old German citizen was finally identified as a suspect. When he was arrested by BLKA special forces on November 28, 2019, the man had a total of 29 counterfeit 20 or 50 euro banknotes with him.
During the subsequent search of his apartment in Herrsching am Ammersee, which also involved the use of a cash-sniffing dog from the Munich Police Headquarters, two further 50-euro counterfeits and small amounts of narcotics were seized.

During an initial evaluation of the seized data carriers, evidence was found that the suspect was using criminal marketplaces on the Darknet and a Facebook group to buy counterfeit money and offer it for sale.
At the request of the Bavarian Cybercrime Central Office, an arrest warrant was issued against the man on November 29, 2019. He has been in custody ever since.
This investigative success proves that law enforcement authorities also have effective investigative options in the Darknet marketplaces and closed user groups. Counterfeiting money or the purchase and distribution of counterfeit money are not trivial offenses, but rather crimes for which the law provides for prison sentences of at least one year.
