In early December, pigeons were filmed in Las Vegas wearing small miniature cowboy hats on their heads. The person or persons responsible have still not been identified.
The most important thing to start with:
1. Unidentified people stick miniature cowboy hats on the heads of pigeons in Las Vegas.
2. When a Facebook user uploads a video of the pigeons wearing mini cowboy hats, it goes viral. The local media reported and a bird protection organization tried to capture the birds.
3. It's not fake. Those responsible have not yet been identified.
We received inquiries about an article about pigeons with little cowboy hats glued to their heads. The thing happened in Las Vegas.
Is that really true?
The fact check
Unfortunately, this is not fake. In Las Vegas, someone actually stuck little hats on pigeons' heads. the New York Times, there was a rodeo in town, but they deny any connection.
The matter became known through a video that a Facebook user named Bobby Lee uploaded. In a parking lot near a dumpster, pigeons flew around and pecked debris from the ground. Two of them wore miniature cowboy hats - one red and one gray.
But who stuck the hats on the pigeons? Suspicion initially fell on the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which was hosted in Las Vegas in December. However, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association distanced itself from a possible connection.

The bird rescue organization Lofty Hopes contacted Bobby Lee. By that time, Mariah Hillman, founder of Lofty Hopes , already had information about a second sighting in the same area and an unconfirmed report of hated doves in Reno.
A short video of Cluck Norris in the carrier yesterday before being taken to Lofty Hopes and then to a vet today. Unlike Billy the Pidge, Chuck had all his toes. Expect updates on both pigeons' progress soon. pic.twitter.com/Qk4uz83Tf4

Cornell University ornithologist Charles Walcott has been studying the common pigeon for 30 years and isn't too concerned. Since the hat does not cover their eyes, the affected pigeons are able to peck food and stones from the ground without hindrance. “But the hats could obstruct the view of a hawk coming down from above.”
Lofty Hopes has now been able to catch three pigeons and free two of their hats. Unfortunately, one of them recently died - what exactly is not mentioned. But she was already weak when she was caught and had lost a few toes.

Conclusion:
Yes, unfortunately it is true. In December 2019, unknown people stuck hats on the heads of several pigeons.
A perpetrator has not yet been found, but the pigeons are caught by a bird protection organization and stripped of their unnecessary accessories.
Respect for other living beings - even if it's "just" a pigeon - is good for us all... it's a shame that some people are still light years away from respectful behavior.
