When you are hungry, your body signals that it urgently needs nutrients. Cravings for sweet, salty and fatty foods, on the other hand, have other causes. Sweets only make it worse

Easily avoid cravings with healthy snacks.

When blood sugar levels become unbalanced and fall quickly, cravings occur. The brain needs energy, sounds the alarm and awakens a powerful desire to eat. There are also other triggers for cravings - for example hormones that often make women reach for sweets and high-fat snacks shortly before their menstruation. The reward center in the brain can also stimulate rapid hunger. This happens particularly often when there is a lack of sleep, stress or boredom.

“If you are aware of these backgrounds, you can avoid or specifically combat cravings. Because when the chocolate is eaten, regrets quickly follow."

Saskia Vetter, ecotrophologist at the Schleswig-Holstein Consumer Center

Small portions and time to eat

Unfavorable eating habits are often behind cravings. They can be easily prevented with the right foods. Whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables help to keep blood sugar levels balanced for a long time and thus avoid binge eating. Sweets, cookies or cakes, on the other hand, cause blood sugar to rise quickly and sharply and then fall just as quickly - the result is the next attack of cravings. Small meal portions, small plates and enough time to eat are further tricks to enjoy consciously and get fuller.

Identify fattening foods more easily with the Nutri-Score

There is often too much sugar, salt or fat hidden in finished products - even if they look healthy and wholesome at first glance. Typical examples are muesli, fruit bars, whole grain biscuits, fruit yoghurt or vegetable chips. In the future, the Nutri-Score make purchasing healthy finished products easier. The new label uses a colored scale from dark green A to deep red E to show whether the proportion of beneficial ingredients predominates.

In this way, nutrition-conscious people should be able to compare ready-made foods better without having to read the tiny printed lists of ingredients. However, since the new label is voluntary, it will not be found on all products. Information about the Nutri-Score and balanced nutrition is available from the consumer advice center.
