In recent days, the Oldenburg-Stadt/Ammerland police station has again received an increasing number of reports of attempted fraud by fake Microsoft employees.
The perpetrators' “scam” is a criminal phenomenon that occurs throughout Germany: They call the victims by phone and pretend to be employees of the “Microsoft” company.
Often in English, those called are then persuaded, through clever and persistent conversation, to install remote maintenance programs or spy software The perpetrators explain over the phone that the victim's computer is threatened expired licenses or security gaps By paying a sum of money, it is then possible to have the alleged computer problems eliminated.
The ultimate goal of the perpetrators is to access credit card, account details or even voucher codes using the previously installed software.
