These are the most popular scams used by credit card thieves. Data can be used for identity fraud.

Around 45 million credit cards are in circulation in Germany alone (source: VuMA). A lucrative target for cyber criminals. Experts estimate that around 24 billion records, from logins to email addresses to financial information, are available on the Dark Web. Some of the most sought after is fresh credit card data, which fraudsters buy in bulk to then commit identity fraud.

What should internet users pay particular attention to in 2022? In their current article on WeLiveSecurity, ESET experts highlight the five popular scams used by cybercriminals to steal credit card data.

“The trade in stolen data on the Dark Web continues to boom. “Cyber ​​criminals are relying on much more sophisticated tricks to obtain sensitive data such as credit card information,” says Thorsten Urbanski, ESET spokesman, “partly because of the ever-stronger protective measures taken by banks. “Especially on the Internet, users should always be suspicious and never answer emails from unknown senders or open the attachment. Even when calling supposedly from your house bank, sensitive data should never be revealed over the phone. Two-factor authentication should be activated for all personal accounts in online shops.”
