Cryptocurrencies and other investment options are very popular. The promise of winnings is tempting. But many small investors have lost money on dubious trading platforms. Instead of the announced winnings, withdrawal fees are charged, the criminals keep their victims in line and demand more and more money. Fraudulent websites such as börsenwacht.net, finanzmarktwacht.net and payback-ltd.com are now promising to get the lost money back, reports our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet .
How does the recovery scam work?
Victims of a fraudulent investment platform often suffer significant financial loss, which is accompanied by great despair. But that's not all: In recovery fraud (also called recovery scam), criminals enrich themselves from this desperation and contact the victims again. This time in a different role: They promise to get the lost money back.
Websites such as börsenwacht.net, finanzmarktwacht.net and payback-ltd.com entice you with free advice over the telephone. After the first conversation, the criminals demand advance payments so that the lost money can be recovered. What is not mentioned: The criminals do not even try to get the investments back. Rather, they take every last bit of money out of those affected' pockets.
How do criminals make contact?
In recovery scams, fraudsters try to get to their victims in various ways:
- The victims are actively contacted. The criminals have email addresses or phone numbers from the previous crypto fraud.
- The criminals write comments on review sites in which victims share their experiences with fraudulent investment portals.
- The criminals place Google ads in the hope that victims will search online for ways to get their money back.

This is how you recognize recovery scams
- Missing information: boersensupervised.net and finanzmarktsupervised.net advertise with reputable-sounding names and a professionally designed website. The logo of the Austrian FMA is even used on finanzmartksupervised.net in order to appear as trustworthy as possible. But the imprint is made up and information about the contact persons cannot be found on the website.
- Internet search: After a short search on payback-ltd.com we came across many positive reviews on Trustpilot. Don't let this fool you and research carefully: The positive reviews of payback-ltd.com are probably bought, many of those affected tell of the platform's fraudulent intentions. In some cases they transferred thousands of euros, money that was lost in addition to the investment losses.
- Lack of regulation: payback-ltd.com states on its website that it operates under a “legal exclusion”. This means that the website does not have to be approved and regulated by financial market authorities. This notice at the bottom of the website should ring alarm bells. It clearly indicates that this is a dubious and fraudulent offer!
Have you been affected by investment fraud or recovery scams?
- Do not make any further deposits! Don't let supposed consultants put you under pressure.
- Report it to the police.
- Contact your bank or credit card company. It may be possible to get the money back.
- Report the platform to the Financial Market Authority and to the Internet Watchlist .
